Our firm is proud to represent an injured worker in a significant Illinois Workers’ Compensation case involving toxic chemical exposure on the job. Our client, a dedicated lead press mechanic at a container company, responded to a fire that broke out in the plant’s oxidizer area. Despite lacking respiratory protection and formal fire response training, he attempted to extinguish the fire using handheld extinguishers, placing himself directly in harm’s way.
During the 15 to 20 minutes he spent fighting the fire, our client was exposed to heavy smoke, chemical fumes, and extinguisher discharge, which led to immediate symptoms including burning eyes, respiratory distress, nausea, and persistent coughing. His condition was so severe that he sought emergency treatment the same day and returned to the ER multiple times in the following weeks. Despite various medical interventions—including inhalers, nebulizer treatments, and specialist care—our client continues to suffer from chronic respiratory complications and has been unable to return to work.
Our team presented compelling evidence, including detailed testimony, extensive medical treatment records, and expert evaluation from Dr. Peter Orris, to support our claim for benefits. The employer disputed key issues such as causation and extent of injury, but we successfully established exposure and its lasting impact on our client’s life.
This case underscores the importance of workplace safety protocols, proper training, and immediate access to protective equipment in industrial settings. We are honored to fight for workers who show courage in the face of danger and deserve protection under Illinois Workers’ Compensation law.
